And the scores are in folks!
Dr. OBGYN = Zero!
Dr. GP = Point!
I got my test results yesterday. She said, and I quote, “Given [the] results of [your] blood work & history, you have (PCOS) polycystic ovarian syndrome.” She wants me to schedule a follow up appointment to discuss the rest of my results. I’ve already called and have an appointment next Tuesday.
My last post was a little less than positive. I was feeling a huge mix of emotions, but mostly I was very frustrated. I went to a doctor I trusted and did not feel heard. I’ve had many people suggest that I find another OBGYN – and they may not be wrong. My reason for feeling so frustrated had a lot to do with not feeling heard. As I said, I know I need to lose a few pounds. The problem for me was the she focused entirely on my weight and didn’t discuss anything else. Even when I mentioned that I’d gotten some preliminary blood work going (like the thyroid test she’s been wanting), she didn’t bother to get my Authorization for Release. She never even asked me how my menstrual cycles were going – something that I think is probably a pretty big deal for someone who’s trying to get pregnant.
My GP, on the other hand, is new to me. I didn’t have one and had been an Urgent Care patient for the last several years. I had just been too lazy to look for a GP after I got insurance and I knew what to expect from Urgent Care. But late last year I had some really strange back pain that I couldn’t seem to get rid of. Urgent Care said “too bad for your luck” and “go find a GP”. I searched the Winchester area for GP’s taking new patients and found the group I’m seeing. My Dr.GP actually listened to me. She’s the one who agreed to run the tests for me. She’s the one who asked the questions: about my weight, recent attempts to lose, recent attempts to get pregnant, what Richard and I have been doing.
So, now I am armed with new information. I feel unbelievably better and justified (as strange as that sounds). I am currently doing as much research as I can squeeze in on PCOS, what it means, what it does, and how to combat it. I haven’t had this much energy and motivation in months! I actually feel like my normal again. :o)
Bad news has never been so great!
